Programme Overview Programme Overview

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) is a one day sea survival course.

This training is intended to meet the requirements as set out in Regulation VI/1 of the STCW convention and STCW Code Section A-VI/1 Paragraph 2.1.1.1

Classroom theory in Personal Survival Techniques, Safety Equipment onboard, use of Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Maintenance of safety equipment, Musters and Drills, Abandon ship, life raft equipment, survival techniques onboard the raft. Role of the Emergency Services.

Practical Exercise in the Pool. Launching the raft, Boarding the raft dry/wet. Taking injured casualties onboard the raft. Procedure for righting an up turned life raft.

Duration and Timetable

Short course delivered over 1 day.

Training Delivery

Three classroom theory sessions followed by one practical session in a sea survival pool or swimming pool.

Certification

On successful completion of this programme, the learner will receive a STCW Personal Survival Techniques Certificate, issued by BIM on behalf of Department of Transport.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of age (Note: 15-year-olds must be accompanied by parent or designated guardian).
  • Either a Seafarers Medical (ENG II) or a letter from a doctor (GP)to state they are fit to undertake Sea Survival Training Activities as part of a sea survival training course in a swimming pool.
  • Photographic Identification must be provided prior to commencement of the course, e.g., Driver’s licence or Passport.

Employment Opportunities

Practical & written examination.
