Fishmongers who wish to further develop their skills, new industry entrants who wish to build their knowledge of seafood handling and filleting.
This programme is for applicants who have completed BIM’s Basic Safety Training Course and are due a refresher course.
This programme will equip the learner with the essential knowledge and skills to work competently in seafood retailing. Learners will have an opportunity to develop their technical fish filleting skills and will undertake training in a range of topics including food safety, fish quality assessment, seafood labelling and culinary skills.
The programme consists of 6 subjects. Chartwork and Pilotage, Practical navigation, Meteorology, Ship Stability and Ship Construction, Signals and Orals, delivered over a 9 week period to prepare candidates for written and oral Department of Transport examinations. On successful completion of these examinations and all ancillary courses, the candidate will receive a Second-Hand Full Certificate of Competency (Fishing)
The programme consists of 4 subjects, Chartwork and Pilotage, Meteorology, Signals and Orals, delivered over a 9-week period to prepare candidates for written and oral Department of Transport examinations on successful completion of these examinations and all ancillary courses. The candidate will receive a Second Hand Limited Certificate of Competency (Fishing). This entitles the candidate to be Second Hand in Limited Area only.
This is a 9-week programme leading to the Department of Transport, Deck Officer Certificate of Competency Skipper Full (Fishing). The programme consists of six subjects: Practical Navigation 1, Practical Navigation 2, Meteorology & Oceanography, Ship Stability & Ship Construction, Maritime Business & Law and Orals.
The aim of this programme is to familiarise the learner with the electronic navigation equipment fitted on modern vessels. Learners will be introduced to the basic theoretical knowledge required to interpret data outputs from speed and distance instruments, depth recording instruments, satellite position fixing systems, electronic charting and shipboard RADAR. Students will practice the use of this equipment in simulation exercises.
On completion of this course, participants will be able to: • Display skills related to the delivery of a first-aid response • Assist in the recovery of people suffering medical emergencies • Provide adequate cover before emergency services arrive • Provide first-aid in the workplace amongst other environments

The Short-Range Radio Operator’s Certificate (SRC) is the basic marine VHF radio operators’ course and is the minimum qualification required by any person operating (or supervising the operation of) a marine VHF radio, whether fixed or hand-held.

This three-day programme covers subjects including: classroom theory in introduction and detail on various first-aid situations which might be encountered on-board. There are also practical exercises on wounds, bandaging, spinal injuries, patient assessment and administering medication.
This training will give all persons intending to go to sea, basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention, familiarisation with working conditions on-board and covers basic safety and legislative requirements.
Personal Survival Techniques (PST) is a one day course split into both theory and practicals, including launching and entering a life raft. Included are actions to be taken by persons for self protection in emergency situations, survival at sea and deployment of safety equipment.
