Programme Overview Programme Overview

This programme is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and
competence to work as an engineering operative on a small fishing vessel. The
learner will gain knowledge about the machinery and equipment typically found
on a fishing vessel. They will also gain skills in the operation and maintenance of
such machinery and equipment.
Topics covered include:

  • Vessel Construction
  • Main Propulsion Systems
  • Auxiliary Machinery
  • Electrical Systems
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
  • Health, Safety and Environmental factors to consider when planning a voyage.

The programme is open to individuals who wish to enhance their knowledge
and skills in Marine Engineering Processes and Operations.

It will be of particular interest to operators of small fishing vessels and those wishing to gain employment in the sector.

Duration and Timeline

Three weeks (full time) – 15 consecutive days

Training Methodology

This is a highly interactive classroom/workshop-based course with a
combination of:

  • Presentations
  • Demonstrations
  • Practical exercises
  • Group discussions

What Qualification/Certification will I receive?

On successful completion of this programme, the learner will receive a QQI
Level 5, 15 credit minor award in Marine Engineering Processes and Operations

Entry Requirements

  • Aged 16 years or over
  •  Junior Cycle (NFQ Level 3) with a Grade C or higher in ordinary level Mathematics (or equivalent)
  • The ability to read, write and communicate efficiently in English. (For learners, whose first language is not English, the applicant must have efficiency in English to 70% in the Marlin test)

Progression and Employment Opportunities

  • This programme is offered as a stand-alone programme.

Or

  • This programme is also a module of BIM’s Certificate in Fishing Vessel
    Engineering Skills programme (PG25230) which leads to a QQI Level 5, 60
    credit, Special Purpose Award. Graduates of that programme have an
    opportunity to progress to Class 3 Certificate of Competency (CoC)
    Engineering Officer (Fishing Vessel) after a period of sea time.

Assessment

Learner’s progress will be checked during the course through a combination of
formative written and practical assessments to reinforce understanding and
learning.
The final assessment consists of:

Written Examination – 60%

Skills demonstration(practical Assessments) – 40%
