Programme Overview Programme Overview

Fishing Vessel (Basic Safety Training) Regulations, 2001 (S.I. 587 of 2001) require all fishing vessel crew members to undergo Basic Safety Training. This three day programme is run at all of BIM’s training centres and consists of the following:

STCW-PST  Personal Survival Techniques 

STCW-EFA  Elementary First Aid

SKL–FPSA  Fire Prevention and Safety Awareness (BIM non-certified course given in addition by BIM)

On successful completion of this three-day course, the learner will receive:

  • BIM Basic Safety Training card
  • STCW Elementary First Aid Certificate
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques Certificate

Fire Prevention and Safety Awareness theory and drills

Personal Survival Techniques theory and drills

Elementary First Aid theory and drills

Certification

A BIM Safety Card, STCW Personal Survival Techniques Certificate and STCW Elementary First Aid Certificate issued by BIM on behalf of the Department of Transport is awarded after successful completion of training and practical exercises.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 16 years of age (15 if accompanied by a responsible adult)
  • Either a Seafarers Medical (ENG II) or a letter from a doctor (GP)to state they are fit to undertake sea survival training activities as part of a sea survival training course in a swimming pool
  • Photographic Identification must be provided prior to commencement of the course, e.g., Driver’s licence or Passport

Employment Opportunities

In order to work on board a Fishing Vessel all fishing vessel crew members are required to undergo Basic Safety Training.  [Fishing Vessel (Basic Safety Training) Regulations, 2001 (S.I. 587 of 2001)]
